What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathic medicine has its roots in 1895. In 1896, Benedict Lust founded the American School of Naturopathy in New York which helped spread its reputation.

Qualified Naturopathic practitioners (recognisable by the letters ND after their name) spend 4 years training and are regarded as the most respected complementary therapists. In some countries, naturopathic studies include 2 years of conventional medical training. Naturopaths are trained in nutritional medicine and one or two additional disciplines such as herbal medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy etc.

A naturopathic consultation can be as lengthy as one and a half hours as the therapists take into account: current nutritional habits, lifestyle, exercise, medical and family history, conventional medication as well as emotional state before deciding on specific healing modalities.

Naturopathic philosophy states that the body has its own wisdom and will always try to heal itself, given the right tools. Detoxification is the Naturopath's principle tool, modalities used to restore health depend on the individuality of the patient.

The human body has a tremendous capacity to heal itself. Naturopathy has its roots in this premise. Conditions helped by naturopathic medicine include:

All metabolic inbalances:

    Unexplained fatigue (chronic or acute)
    Headaches/Migraines
    Digestive Problems
    Allergies/Intolerances
    Skin Problems
    Frequent Colds and Infections
    Hormone Imbalances (Puberty and Menopause)
    Men’s Health Concerns/Prostate Disorders
    Cancer
    Automimmune conditions
    Children's Developmental/Behavioural Issues

What are Allergies?

There are different types of allergies but it is generally known that only 5% of recorded allergies (digestive and respiratory) are immediate and other ‘intolerances’ can take up to 72 hours to manifest. Symptoms can vary enormously, from headaches, (including migraines), eye inflammation, ear infections, loss of hearing, glue ear, tinnitus, irregular heart beats, IBS, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, nausea, asthma, sinus congestion, hay fever, joint pain, muscular weakness, chronic fatigue, obesity and depression.
